Roles are the main function that are randomly assigned among players. Each role has a utility and behavior. Some roles existed since Flicker's legacy version.
Gamemodes
- In Regular Mode, the roles are separated into three different teams: the Good Team, the Evil Team, and the Neutral Team. If the Good Team eliminates the Evil Team, the Good Team wins, and vice versa. The Evil Team can also win if there are a majority of evil members surviving with the Good Team. The round will result in a draw if no players remain. Regular Mode is the only gamemode that uses customized characters.
- Anonymous Mode shares the same rules and gameplay as Regular Mode, but with specified characters instead of customized characters.
- In Classic Mode, roles and characters only from the legacy version will be in this gamemode.
Role Limits
Each round in Regular Mode and Anonymous Mode, there can only be:
- 5 good roles (including survivors)
- 3 evil roles
- 1 neutral role
Each round in Classic Mode, there can only be:
- 4 good roles (including survivors)
- 1 evil role
Fifteen players equal the maximum capacity of a queue.
Classic Mode
This gamemode supports only the original casts of roles before the 3.0.0 update.
Classic Mode only features the following roles:
Classic Mode Roles
Regular Mode/Anonymous Mode
Regular Mode was released alongside the new roles and features during the 3.0.0 update. Regular Mode features a new system gameplay mechanic: the Good Team, the Evil Team, and the Neutral Team, which organize good, evil, and neutral roles. Anonymous Mode shares these same features.
Regular Mode and Anonymous Mode features the following roles:
Good Team
Detective
The Detective is a replacement for the Investigator role in Regular Mode (making the Investigator exclusive to Classic Mode, being a classic counterpart of the Detective). They are given two or three clues each night to figure out who is on the Good or Evil Team. They are the leader of the Good Team.
Survivor
The Survivor is the default role without any special abilities. Their main objective, hence the name above, is to survive. There is a maximum of 7 survivors per game. This role was originated in Classic Mode.
Savior
The Savior can revive a dead player once in a single round. The Savior can revive any dead player, as long as they are in the game. If the Savior revives a twin, the chosen twin is brought back, while the other remains a spectator. This role was leaked before the 3.0.0 update released.
Psychic
The Psychic is a modified role in Regular Mode. Unlike in Classic Mode, the Psychic can know the exact role of a player. The Psychic in Regular Mode learns whether the player is on the Good or Evil Team. This role was originated in Classic Mode.
Spy
The Spy can "bug" one player to view who visited them, and whether or not they were attacked. This means that they can see if a player was protected, if they received a muffin, etc. This role was leaked before the 3.0.0 update released.
Medic
The Medic can save a targeted player from the Murderer. If the player has been targeted by the Assassin, on the other hand, the Medic is unable to save the target. They can also save themselves once per game. This role was originated in Classic Mode.
Twin
The Twin is a unique yet fragile role. A twin knows who their other twin is. Twins are soul linked, meaning if one twin dies, the other is also impacted. However, this isn't always the case; if both twins die and one of them gets revived, the other will not. This role was originated in Classic Mode before the 3.0.0 update.
Muffin Man
The Muffin Man can deliver a muffin to someone per night, with the muffins having no benefit or effect. Muffins are cosmetic and are purely for entertainment purposes only. Muffins, however, can help you reveal your role as the Muffin Man by sending a note to the player you will give the muffin to and prove your innocence. This role was originated in Classic Mode before the 3.0.0 update.
Evil Team
Murderer
The Murderer can kill someone every time the lights flicker out. They can't be blocked by the Witch or assassinated by the Assassin as their advantage. They are also known as being the original antagonist on the game, being the leader of the Evil Team. However, if the Medic chooses to save the murderer’s target, then the target will not be murdered. This role was originated in Classic Mode.
Witch
The Witch, the counterpart of the Medic, can block a player's ability for a night. For example, if the Medic attempts to protect someone, but the Witch blocks the Medic's ability, the Medic won't be able to save the target. If the Witch attempts to block the Murderer or the Assassin, the effects will be nullified. This role was leaked before the 3.0.0 update released.
Assassin
The Assassin is similar to the Murderer, but the Medic can't save the person who will be assassinated. They can only kill once during the game. The Assassin is aware of the identity of the Murderer, but not vice versa. The Assassin is unable to kill the murderer.
Dark Psychic
The Dark Psychic, the evil counterpart of the Psychic, can reveal a player's team status.
Scout
The Scout, the evil counterpart of the Spy, can "bug" one player to view who visited them, and whether or not they were attacked. This means that they can see if a player was protected, if they received a muffin, etc.
Neutral Team
Clown
The Clown's goal is to get voted off (not killed) in order to use their ability. Once voted off, they get to drag someone down with them. Before this role was officially implemented, it was broken in the Development Site and had to be tested.
Scrapped
Milkman
The Milkman is an old role concept of the Muffin Man, eventually being replaced by it. The Milkman would be able to deliver a carton of milk to someone per night, with the milk cartons having no benefit or effect. Milk cartons were cosmetic and were purely for entertainment purposes only. Theoretically, they would help you prove your innocence and evade capture.
Removed
Pumpkin Man
The Pumpkin Man could deliver a miniature pumpkin to someone per night, with the pumpkins having no benefit or effect. Pumpkins were cosmetic and were purely for entertainment purposes only. If a player receives a pumpkin from the Pumpkin Man, they would achieve the "Halloween 2020 Badge!" badge. This role was implemented in the game on the October 22nd, 2020.
Trivia
- In Classic Mode, the Psychic would most likely be the best challenger against the Murderer, since the Investigator can only have their votes doubled and influence all the other players in-game.
- The Investigator was replaced by the Detective in Regular Mode in version 3.0.0.
- The Medic requires extreme luck to guess the next target. When the Murderer has been voted out or left, they don't have a large purpose — they can only protect people from the Murderer, but they can't stop the Assassin's attacks. They do have some uses in specific cases, though (i.e. they can save others who reveal their roles).
- The Dark Psychic is the most common evil role for an inexperienced savior to revive, because they may believe they are reviving the good psychic.
- The Clown role had errors in the Development Site before being released; thus, it was not implemented in the game along with the other features in the 3.0 update.
- The game is most likely inspired by Town of Salem: a werewolf party game, a mafia suspicion game, or a combination of both. This is proven by the game mechanics and its features. For example, in Town of Salem, a journal is a last will, the Clown works like a Jester, the Assassin functions similarly to the Mafioso, and so on.
- The Milkman is the only scrapped role in Flicker to the public’s knowledge so far.
